Local Students Volunteer at Missouri Mission of Mercy Free Dental Care Event

Missouri College Students Apply Dental Skills Learned In the Classroom, Give Back to Community.

St. Louis, Mo., April 24, 2014 – Although millions of Americans now have access to healthcare through the Affordable Care Act, gaps in the healthcare system remain, with many people still lacking the resources to receive dental care. That’s why on Friday, May 2, 2014 Dental Hygiene and Dental Assistant students from Missouri College are volunteering at the Missouri Mission of Mercy (MOMOM), a free dental clinic open to the public.

Missouri Dental Association and MDA Foundation are hosting the state’s third Mission of Mercy at the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis May 2-3, 2014, providing oral healthcare to patients of all ages who otherwise may not be able to obtain it. Missouri College dental students are volunteering at the event as a part of their service learning commitment, which combines community service with classroom instruction and allows students to apply what they have learned in real-world settings.

“Missouri College shares the dental community’s commitment to helping those in need by participating in events like MOMOM,” said Karl Petersen, president of Missouri College. "We know that our students look forward to this opportunity to provide dental care to individuals who need it most.”

Since its inception, Missouri College has participated in a number of local charitable events. In fact, in 2012 and 2013 more than 1,500 students provided service to 9,600 St. Louis community members. At this year’s MOMOM event, Missouri College students will be among more than 1,000 other dental and lay volunteers, with an estimated 100 dental chairs arranged for dental services including cleanings, fillings and extractions.

Services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached. The doors open at 5:30 a.m. and attendees should plan to arrive early for the best chance to receive free dental services. Mission of Mercy events nationwide have helped more than 135,000 patients and provided nearly $76 million in free dental services since its inception in 2000.
