Allied Health Professionals: Making a Difference in the Medical FieldAllied health is a cluster term that describes a variety of health professions that work as part of the larger medical field. Nearly 200 different roles in the medical field are identified as allied health positions and employ over hundreds of thousands of professionals. Allied health professionals represent nearly 60% of all health care providers and work in all sectors of the medical field primarily as medical assistants, therapists, and technologists.

  • Medical assistants work under the supervision of other medical professionals and have a direct impact on patient care. The role of the assistant is to perform specific procedures as part of a larger treatment plan. Medical assistants can serve in a variety of roles including radiological assistant, recreational therapy assistant, clinical assistant, physical therapy assistant, administrative assistant, and respiratory therapy technicians.
  • Therapists evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, and evaluate the patient's response to therapy. Ongoing progress monitoring occurs to determine next steps and changes that should be made to treatment plans.
  • Technologists focus on scientific and technical functions of the medical field and work in medical laboratories to advance and impact high quality patient care. Medical and clinical technologists perform hematological, microscopic, chemical, immunologic, and bacteriological diagnostic analyses on bodily fluids.

Many allied health professionals are more likely to work in a skilled nursing or ambulatory setting than in a hospital. This increase in services being delivered via ambulatory care is due, in part, to medical advancements in medical technology that reduce extensive hospital stays.
