Suffice to say, dental health and hygiene has come a long way even since the 1950s, but there are still stubborn myths surrounding dental hygiene that need to be put to rest so that an even healthier America can prosper dental-wise in the future. Below are some common myths surrounding dental hygiene – keep track of which ones you have believed and change your behaviors accordingly for a cleaner, healthier set of teeth and gums moving forward.

Leave Bleeding Gums Alone

It makes sense that when you notice that your gums are bleeding, you don’t want to brush or floss your teeth for fear of making your gums bleed even more. While this seems to make sense, once you understand the mechanics of WHY your gums are bleeding, then you’ll understand that brushing and flossing is actually a valued activity to help your gums to cease bleeding.

Bleeding gums come from the build-up of plaque on the enamel of your teeth. As the plaque accumulates, it causes your gums to pull back or to “recede” from the teeth – which then creates an opening where food can fall and decay, causing infections in your gums. Using floss to remove the plaque build-up on your teeth will help your gum to snuggle-up to your teeth again, thus ending the bleeding. Brushing your teeth serves the same purpose, especially on the large top and sides of your teeth. Your gums actually regenerate very quickly when healthy, so helping your gums to be clean and free of irritating plaque is one of the best things you can do for your mouth and smile.

Bad Breath Comes from Brushing Your Teeth Badly or Not Enough

Simply not true! Yes, if you don’t brush your teeth and floss regularly, you can definitely develop bad breath as a result, particularly after just having eaten a meal. Those crumbs of meat and dairy can begin to rot in-between your teeth and give off a fetid odor no one wants to smell. But bad dental hygiene is just one cause for bad breath – there are others.

What you put into your stomach can cause bad breath. Hamburgers loaded with garlic & onions will certainly raise a stink with anyone sitting close to you after such a meal, while strong drinks can also give of a fairly memorable aroma you may wish others were not smelling. You can also give off bad breath due to certain sicknesses such as pneumonia. And more serious conditions with your gastric system as well as your lungs can also create bad scents and odors. If you have such smells emanating from your mouth despite good dental hygiene, you should see your doctor to make sure there are no other causes to be concerned with.

Chewing Gum or Eating an Apple is the Same as Brushing Your Teeth Hygiene-Wise

This one is pretty serious, as the myth claims that you can skip brushing your teeth if you eat an apple or chew gum. The idea behind this myth is that the fiber in apples and the adhesive quality in chewing gum as well as the constant impact of gum against teeth or apple against teeth will remove cavity-causing food stuffs that are stuck on and in your teeth. While there is some advantage to eating apples and chewing gum opposed to some other snack foods, neither of these foods can reach food trapped between your teeth – only something remarkably thin like dental floss can do that. The danger with this myth is that people will skip brushing their teeth because they think a much less-effective method of hygiene will work better – and it won’t. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing several times a week is strongly recommended for everyone – no exceptions!
